Mombasa Excursions & Short Safaris
01 - Full-Day Mombasa City Tour
With a fascinating history dating back to 200 AD, Mombasa is the largest
port in East Africa. Your day takes you down an intriguing maze of cobbled
streets, past overhanging balconies and through mysterious doorways to
bustling markets filled with exotic spice, fruit and colourful fabric. Visit
the Akamba wood carvers and enjoy lunch on the Tamarind Dhow. In the late
afternoon visit Haller Park, a former quarry now reforested and stocked with
animals. Half-day tours are also available.
02 - Tamarind Evening Dhow Trip
Sipping sundowners and nibbling appetisers you sail to Tudor creek. The
evening on board the Arab dhow includes a delightful meal prepared by the
chefs from the Tamarind Restaurant and a live band, playing popular tunes
for dancing under a canopy of stars.
03 - Full-Day Wasini Kisite Dhow Trip
Departing by splendid dhow, the day is focused on relaxation, stunning
surroundings and a little history. Highlights include snorkelling in Kisite
Marine Park to spot dolphins and possibly turtles, looking at marine-life
from a glass-bottomed boat, eating fresh seafood for lunch, a historical
tour around Wasini fishing village and perhaps some relaxation under swaying
coconut trees.
04 - The Champagne Dhow Trip
Departing in the morning by dhow to Sand Island, the trip allows its guests
to snorkel the coral reefs, relax and soak up the sunshine. An exquisite
seafood mezze lunch awaits you and includes local catches of crab, calamari,
prawns, sushumi and much more. Later, continue the cruise through exotic
mangrove forests, enjoying sights of colourful birds and fishing villages
before arriving back as the sun sets.
05 - Overnight at Shimba Hills Lodge
About an hour’s drive from Mombasa, Shimba is covered by beautiful forest
foliage and feels cooler than the coast. Your afternoon game drive may
include sightings of elephant, buffalo, roan and giraffe and if you are
lucky, the rare sable antelope. Spend the evening relaxing in the romance of
the lodge. Depart the next day after breakfast.
06 - Overnight excursion to Mwazaro Beach
This two day excursion is truly a cultural experience where guests will
enjoy time with members of the Digo Tribe, an excursion through the Ramisi
River delta system and a dhow trip to Kisite Marine Park. There is even the
possibility of snorkelling with turtles and dolphins. The food is fresh and
delightful and accommodation first-class.
07 - Fort Jesus By Night
You depart by traditional dhow as the sun sets over the Indian Ocean. Then
from the Old Dhow Harbour a short guided walk brings you through the Old
Town to Fort Jesus, built by the Portuguese in 1593. Here a vibrant evening
includes excellent cuisine and the re-enactment of East Africa’s turbulent
history in an extravagant show.
